On the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the launch of the Hirak movement in Algeria, SHOAA for Human Rights organized a panel discussion in London on Sunday, February 22, 2026, entitled: “Seven Years After the Hirak Movement: Paths, Challenges, and Prospects.” The event provided a space for exchanging perspectives and conducting an analytical review of the Hirak’s trajectory since its inception on February 22, 2019, as a defining moment in Algeria’s contemporary political history. Through this large-scale peaceful movement, Algerian women and men expressed their firm commitment to democratic change and to building a state founded on popular legitimacy and the rule of law. The discussion addressed the various phases of the Hirak, the political and social contexts that gave rise to it, the dynamics that shaped its evolution, and the profound transformations it generated, particularly in fostering political awareness and redefining the relationship between society and the state.
The panel also reviewed the major challenges and transformations that have accompanied the Hirak over the past seven years, amid political and legal developments that have affected its continuity and presence in the public sphere. Participants emphasized that despite these challenges, the Hirak has left a lasting impact on societal awareness. In this context, the discussion highlighted the central role of societal awareness in promoting a culture of citizenship and strengthening demands for rights and freedoms, as well as the importance of civic participation as a fundamental pillar of any sustainable democratic transition, contributing to accountability and the promotion of good governance. The panel further explored future prospects and possibilities for change in light of current developments, emphasizing that the Hirak has contributed to fostering renewed political awareness and reaffirming the centrality of the popular will as the primary source of legitimacy. Through this event, SHOAA for Human Rights reaffirmed its commitment to supporting spaces for open dialogue, promoting a culture of human rights, and contributing to the advancement of the values of freedom, dignity, and the rule of law as essential foundations for any genuine democratic process.
