The Hussein Dey Court in Algiers handed down, on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, a sentence of two years in prison and a fine of 300,000 Algerian dinars against Fethi Ghares, the national coordinator of the Democratic and Social Movement (MDS).
Ghares was prosecuted following media statements in which he criticized remarks made by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
He was charged with “insulting a constituted body”, in accordance with Article 146 of the Penal Code, and “spreading false information likely to undermine public order and security”, pursuant to Article 196 bis of the same Code.
During the trial session held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the public prosecutor had requested a three-year prison sentence and a fine of 300,000 Algerian dinars against the defendant.
