SHOAA Condemns Incitement and Racist Campaigns Against African Migrants in Algeria

SHOAA Organization is deeply concerned about the alarming rise in hate speech, racism, and incitement against Sub-Saharan African migrants in Algeria, particularly in the context of escalating diplomatic tensions between Algeria and the Republic of Mali.

The organization has observed with grave concern the spread of such racist discourse, especially on social media platforms, where it has been widely circulated—even echoed by individuals with political or public authority. This growing trend contributes dangerously to the spread of hatred and discrimination within society.

SHOAA strongly condemns all forms of racism and hate speech, affirming that any incitement to violence or hatred based on race, origin, or legal status constitutes a blatant violation of human rights principles. The organization reminds that preserving human dignity is a collective responsibility that must not be politicized or compromised.

The organization highlights that African migrants in Algeria are among the most vulnerable groups, living in extremely difficult conditions. Targeting them in public discourse poses a direct threat to their safety and well-being, in addition to being a clear breach of Algeria’s international obligations—especially the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Accordingly, SHOAA calls on Algerian authorities to:

  • Take immediate action to end incitement and hate speech in both media and on social platforms.
  • Ensure the protection, safety, and rights of African migrants, in line with national laws and relevant international conventions.
  • Hold accountable anyone who promotes racism or advocates for forced deportations outside legal frameworks.

SHOAA also calls on the United Nations, the UNHCR, and international human rights organizations to urgently intervene to monitor the situation in Algeria, provide support and protection mechanisms for Sub-Saharan migrants and refugees, and ensure that Algeria upholds its international human rights commitments.
