Human Rights Defender Djamal Lalileche Placed in Pretrial Detention Pending Investigation

On Thursday, November 7, 2024, the investigative judge at the Chéraga Court ordered the provisional detention of human rights defender, Djamal Lalileche, at the Koléa prison pending investigation, on charges related to his posts on Facebook.

Djamal Lalileche, a member of the Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights, was arrested on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at his home by police officers. He was subsequently held at the Staouéli police station until his appearance before the public prosecutor at the Chéraga Court on Thursday morning, November 7, 2024. The public prosecutor referred him to the investigative judge, who then ordered his detention pending further investigation.

At 67 years old, Djamal Lalileche suffers from chronic health conditions. This is not the first time he has faced judicial persecution; he was previously imprisoned in 2021 for similar charges related to his social media posts, spending eight months in Koléa prison. Lalileche has also been subject to ongoing harassment due to his human rights activism and his exercise of the fundamental right to freedom of expression.
