As we mark National Press Day on October 22nd, Algeria faces a harsh reality where press freedom continues to be under threat. Journalists across the country are subjected to increasing pressure and blatant violations of their fundamental rights. This day, meant to celebrate the essential role of journalism in promoting democracy and freedom of expression, is overshadowed by ongoing repression and arbitrary arrests.
Among the journalists currently imprisoned are Ihsane El Kadi, Fouzia Amrani, Omar Ferhat, Soufian Ghirous and Badreddine Guermat. detained solely for exercising their legitimate right to report the truth and share the voice of the people with the public. These violations directly attack the very principles of press freedom, guaranteed by international human rights standards.
On this occasion, SHOAA Human Rights Organisation renews its call for the Algerian government to adhere to international norms regarding freedom of speech and the press. The organisation strongly condemns the continued detention of these journalists and calls for their immediate and unconditional release.
Such repressive policies reflect a broader rejection of the democratic principles that many sectors of society have been advocating for, especially during the popular protests of the Hirak movement.
A free and independent press is a cornerstone of any democratic system. SHOAA Human Rights Organisation urges the creation of a safe media environment that respects pluralism and allows journalists to carry out their work without fear or intimidation. Press freedom is not only a right but also the foundation of justice and equality in democratic societies.
