On Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10th, the world this year celebrates the 76th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This anniversary comes amidst a sense of frustration among people due to the failure of governments and institutions to protect human rights in the face of grave violations occurring worldwide.
In Algeria, regarding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees freedom, dignity, and equality in rights, citizens are continuously subjected to violations, especially in recent years following the launch of the peaceful Hirak movement demanding freedom and democracy. Algeria is witnessing severe violations by the authorities against the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association. Arbitrary arrests target activists, human rights defenders, journalists, and political opponents, with many violations carried out under the guise of counter-terrorism.
On the occasion of the 76th anniversary of Human Rights Day, and amidst the significant challenges we face due to the deteriorating state of human rights in Algeria, we at SHOAA for Human Rights reflect on our tireless efforts to monitor and document grave human rights violations in the country. We also commemorate our struggle to defend human rights, amplify the voices of individuals fighting for their rights and freedoms, and connect the human rights movement in Algeria with the international community.
On this occasion, and in light of the flagrant violations of the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by Algerian authorities, SHOAA for Human Rights reaffirms its commitment to continuing the struggle to promote human rights and achieve justice, freedom, and equality in Algeria.
