The court of Sidi M’hamed demanded on Sunday five years in prison and a five-year ban on working as a journalist against Algerian journalist Ihsane El-Kadi, who was detained last December. This was at the end of a trial on Sunday 26 March where the person concerned himself decided to remain silent. The final verdict is expected on Sunday 2 April.
El-Kadi is the director of the Algerian station Radio M and the news website Maghreb Emergent, two independent media outlets critical of the Algerian government.
He is suspected “of having received sums of money and privileges from persons and organizations in the country and abroad to engage in activities likely to undermine the state security and stability,” said the Court of Algiers.
The court also requested the seizure of the journalist’s “property and funds” and a fine of 700,000 dinars.
